Alex Cunningham speaks to paedophile hunters, experts and gardaí about their methods and the questions surrounding their work
In 2023, Cork man Tim Bowen was caught by a vigilante paedophile-hunting group when he turned up at a café expecting to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex. He was later convicted in connection with the incident.
Former RTÉ producer Kieran Creaven was also caught by a vigilante group after contacting someone he believed to be a child online, and was later convicted.
However, the methods used by some of these groups have raised concerns about the presumption of innocence, due process and human rights.
In Monday’s Irish Examiner, reporter Alex Cunningham met some of those involved in paedophile hunting. He also spoke to experts and gardaí about how the groups operate – and whether what they do helps or hinders the conviction of child sex offenders.
Alex joins the Deirdre O’Shaughnessy Podcast for today’s episode.

I don’t think that they do. These guys are a bunch of screw ups. Usually after encounters with groups like these, their targets usually just go underground. Or end up filing for restraining orders against them haha.
Short answer – they don’t. They don’t even identify child sex predators. If they conducted their “stings” on kid sites, there might be an argument. But bait-and-switching from adult sites doesn’t “protect” anyone, conviction or not.
And I still say that civilians that do these things should be charged with child endangerment. The defense that there is no actual child involved should carry exactly the same weight there that it does for their targets.
Using “child protection” as a pretext to threaten or brutalize someone is abusive and illegal. And a claimed moral purpose doesn’t excuse it at all. And mere accusations of sx abuse (or attempted sx abuse) isn’t the same as proof, and gives no one a right to harass, threaten or physically assault.
However, as to the motives of those engaged in vigilante behaviors, the motivations can be quite varied and multi-faceted. Not all who participate in these vigilante witch hunts are evil thugs, although many are.
A percentage of these folks may be victims of abuse themselves, or may be swept up in a hysteria/moral panic, directly influenced by social media as well as mainstream media. When acting in concert, it can be viewed as classic mob mentality. Think of the “mob” storming Dr. Frankenstein’s castle with torches and clubs to ‘get the monster’.
As to the thugs who do this because they can, and justify their behaviors as being righteous and moral, most if not all belong in prison themelves.
